Wireless Home Security Camera: Should You Install One?

In this article, we will discuss whether you should setup a wireless home security camera in your house. Why would you want to do this? There are many reasons and you will have to continue reading if you want a safer home.

In order to secure your homes or apartments, most of you have installed alarm systems that will make a noise when the home has been burglarized or otherwise infiltrated. With some of you, this alarm system will also trigger an automatic phone call to the police station. This call ensures that the police will come in the unfortunate event that someone has broken into your home.

The problem with these alarm systems that exist today is that they are reactive. Nobody is caught in the act of breaking into your house. And the reality is that, overwhelmingly, those that break into your house will not be caught and they may even return to break into your home again.

Feeling safe in your own home is one those things in life that is non-negotiable. If you cannot feel safe in your own home, you probably shouldn’t be there.

One thing that allows you to feel much safer in your own home, and know what is going on at all times, is a wireless home security camera. These cameras now come in all prices to fit any budget. Wireless security cameras for your home not only take live video of many rooms at one time, they can also contain a DVR. Just as you record DVR programs, these quality home cameras can record every ounce of video to a hard drive. Thus, you will not only know when someone has entered a room, you can identify them.

Break-ins are not the only reason to learn how to setup wireless security cameras in your home. There are many other good reasons for getting security cameras in your house. Not only do they allow you to identify someone who has broken into your house, they also often will prevent intruders in the first place. One thing that potential intruders hate is recordings of their activity. Simply by advertising that you have built-in security cameras, you prevent several break-ins. In this way, home security cameras serve as proactive crime prevention as opposed to simply reactive, like the home security system that you probably have installed at the moment.

There are other, simpler reasons that I enjoy our wireless camera security setup. My simpler reason is our two kids. Many of us have baby monitors so we can hear the sounds of our children. Well, just as we prefer TV to radio, we prefer video to just sounds. With a click on our laptop, my wife and I can quickly see how the kids are doing in their rooms. Are they simply making noises in their sleep or is there a real problem? All of these problems can be quickly identified and dealt with. My wife and I sleep much better after having placed a wireless security camera in our kids room.

Should I Choose A Wired or Wireless Home Security System?

For many people, home security is a big deal, We all want our families to be safe within their own homes. With new technologies come new features for video surveillance systems, and we find ourselves asking whether it’s really worth it to have the latest technology. One of the biggest decisions we make about our video surveillance systems is whether we would like a wired system, or if we would like to opt for a newer wireless video technology.

How many cameras will you need?

The first question you should have answered is how many cameras you actually need to install. What is the minimum number of cameras that you would feel safe with. Wireless systems are limited to 4 cameras within a given range, so if you can accomplish your goals using 4 cameras or less, than a wireless video surveillance system would be perfect.

Do you have the ability to run cable?

When installing a wired video surveillance system, it’s best to run the cable through the walls. Doing this keeps your cable hidden, and it also prevents burglars from following your cable and stealing your DVR as well. However, in apartments and some condominiums you are not allowed to cut through the drywall, making it difficult to feed cable. If you live somewhere that doesn’t allow you to run cable through the walls, then you probably have to use a wireless system.

How far away from your recorder will the cameras be?

Another major consideration when choosing between a wired or a wireless video surveillance system is how far your cameras are going to be from the recorder. Wireless systems have a limited range, and in some cases, even a few walls could cause signal interference. If your cameras are going to be less than 50 feet away from your recorder then you can most likely use a wireless video surveillance system, otherwise you would need to use a wired system.

Always test your wireless system before installing

If you’ve decided on a wireless system for your home surveillance needs, then it’s always a good idea to run a quick test on the sytem before you permanently install anything. Some wireless systems suffer from poor signal strength, and if you test this out beforehand, you may be able to reposition your cameras to get the best signal strength possible.

Wireless video surveillance

A wireless video surveillance camera can boost your wireless security at home or business. They are used to catch intruders or monitor a home or office from a far away distance. They are also used at public places to monitor civilians. Today, video surveillance cameras are inexpensive and easy to install.

Video surveillance cameras have storage devices such as Digital Video Recorders that enable viewing of recorded video. They are also flexible to temporary installation. Wireless security cameras can operated from 100 feet away. There are two types of wireless video surveillance camera systems depending on whether the cameras are hidden or clearly visible.

Covert system:

When the cameras are hidden, the system is called a covert system. Such cameras are used to monitor babysitters, nannies and housekeepers at home or helpers and servants at office. Covert systems can be used to ensure that your property and belongings are safe when you are not at home. They can provide wireless security at home.

Overt system:

When the surveillance cameras are clearly visible, the system is called an overt system. They can be used to traffic monitoring, catch speeding vehicles and thieves. Overt systems are useful at banks, casinos, shopping malls, airports etc.

Advantages of wireless video surveillance:

Grants you peace of mind when you are away from home.
Wireless cameras can be moved from one location to another.
Burglars and intruders can be caught red-handed.
Reduce the probability of break-ins.

Disadvantages of wireless video surveillance:

Cameras have to be maintained.
Cameras could be stolen or damaged.
Privacy could be suppressed.

Video surveillance is becoming extremely popular at public places. According to a survey, the UK has one CCTV camera for every 14 people. Wireless video surveillance is an effective social control step and a deterrent against crime.

Question by RB: How secure are these wireless video devices?
I’m thinking of buying a wireless video security system connected to a PC.

How secure are these devices. Could someone “look inside” from the outside?

Are they scrambled or security enabled?

Best answer:

Answer by Lucid
It really depends on what type of wireless encryption is used. I would not use WEP, as this is easily cracked.

Use WPA or WPA2 with a tough key, and your network is pretty much impregnable wirelessly.

You did not specify the system, but any decent wireless security device SHOULD allow encryption.

Importance Of Wireless Video Surveillance

Wireless video surveillance has become an important and integral part of our security system. To prevent unwanted and sudden terrorist attacks, malls, railway stations, airports and other public and government places are always under surveillance. Besides the above, video surveillance is also common in industries to scrutinize parts of a process. The most common form of video surveillance is done with the help of CCTV’s. These are also used for the surveillance of house hold security.

Use of CCTV cameras have some constrains. These CCTV cameras remain connected to a control panel with the help of wires and cables. These cables can easily get damaged by bad weather, accidents and can even get sabotaged. Moreover it gets very difficult and costly to arrange for cables and wires for long distance surveillances. Wired video or audio surveillance requires the presence of monitoring stations nearby the areas of surveillance. This will become a problem in case the focus of surveillance is always on the move. This problem is solved by wireless video surveillance. Wireless surveillance not only makes surveillance easy but also increases the domain of surveillance.

wireless surveillance camera works with the help of radars, signals and radio waves. The most common is the use of radio waves of different frequencies. These systems consist of small, hidden cameras that relay signals over short distances in the form of live images. So these have become quick, cost effective security systems that will help us to boost our existing security system. In modern days there has been a shift from the traditional analog based CCTV towards a more digitalised surveillance. IP or Internet protocol cameras have revolutionised wireless surveillance by providing a networked video surveillance and recording. These IP based cameras differ from their traditional counterparts in being wireless as well as they can receive and send data through the internet. They have encrypted radio technology and are therefore easy to install and easy for remote surveillance.

A wide range of IP based surveillance cameras are available in the market. A camera can be chosen depending on the area of surveillance. For instance the lowest Trango IP based camera can help in surveillance from as far as 40 miles away from the monitoring system. Then there is the WirelessGRID wptz IP based camera that is widely used in large areas for surveillance.

While dealing with the advantages of using wireless and specially IP based surveillance cameras in our security system, we must also take into account some of its disadvantages. These cameras are expensive and need a high network bandwidth for its functioning. There installations require specific technicians and they are open to hacking as they transmit data through the internet. So it is best to use an IP based surveillance for a wireless security system only when the use of CCTV cameras is not possible or may hinder public security.
